Lithuanian curd cheese bars – the dessert you’ll fall in love with

For breakfast or dessert – a glazed curd cheese bar is the perfect sweet treat to enjoy with a hot cup of coffee or tea. This snack, which is hugely popular in Lithuania, is made from milled, pressed and sweetened curd cheese. This is formed into the shape of a bar and glazed with chocolate. It’s a deliciously sweet but slightly healthier alternative to traditional desserts.

The history of this unique curd snack remains a mystery, but it probably began to be made back in the Soviet Union. It is also believed that the very first automated production line for making glazed cheese products was in Lithuania. According to some stories, curd cheese bars were created by confectioners who wanted to provide healthier dessert options for children – they contain calcium, protein and other important nutrients that little ones need.

Tourists usually fall in love with this unique dessert as soon as they try it. For some, it’s another reason to visit Lithuania again! The fact that this unique dessert is associated with Lithuania is evidenced by the trend for YouTube or other social media platforms, in which foreigners show their reactions when they taste snacks from various countries. One of the most common Lithuanian snacks featured is… yes, you guessed it – curd cheese bars! And most often, they are pleasantly surprised.

A chocolate-covered vanilla curd bar, with or without poppy seeds, is probably the most traditional option. But for those who like to try something new, there are tons of choices. Salted caramel, jelly pieces, raisins, berries or jam, coconut chips – these are just a few of the most common ingredients in the curd cheese bar you’ll find in Lithuanian shops.

And curd cheese bars cater for healthy and eco-friendly eaters too. Many bars no longer contain added sugar or palm oil, and there are also non-dairy options for vegans, as well as bars containing extra protein.

If you haven’t yet tasted Lithuania’s most beloved dessert, be sure to do it the next time you visit!
