Lithuania’s life sciences sector is the fastest growing in EU. Annual growth 19 %

The Lithuanian Life Sciences Sector shows strong traditions, consistent investments in infrastructure, has a rapidly growing number of startups that are noticed internationally. This sector has a pool of talented and highly-qualified specialists.

Labor productivity in the pharmaceuticals sector is almost 5 times higher than the overall economy‘s labor productivity.

Clinical Trials

Clinical trials in Lithuania cover a range of therapeutic areas, such as: Endocrilogy, Gastroenterlogy, Rheumatology, Pulmonology, Infectology, Dermatology, Urology, Pediatric, Surgery, Nephrology, Cardiology, Psychiatry, Hematology, Neurology, Oncology, Ophthalmology. There are more than 1200 clinical trials ongoing in the country. Over 90 International pharma and medical companies are conducting clinical trials in Lithuania.

R&D

There are 8300 R&D researchers and scientists in various fields. Expenditures for R&D doubled since the financial crisis. There are favorable tax incentives for investments into R&D,  including:

  • Triple deduction: expenses incurred by companies while carrying out R&D can be deducted from taxable income tree times;
  • Super-accelerated depreciation: the acquisition price of fixed assets used in the R&D activities can be written-off within two years;
  • Investments into substantial technology improvements: entitle companies to reduce taxable profits by 50%.

Medical devices

Medical Devices export (incl. re-export) more than doubled since 2008. Main export markets: United Kingdom, France, Russia, Spain, USA. Research areas include biomedical diagnostics and monitoring systems, efficiency research of electronic security systems, analysis and synthesis of electronic devices, quality of electronic systems. Industrial electronics, including medical and defense electronics has been a prevalent application sector in electronics manufacturing with telecommunication equipment.

Lasers

Lithuania, with 10% of the global market, is one of the main exporters of femtosecond lasers systems in the world, a 80% of total Lithuanian laser production exported to nearly 100 countries (key markets: Germany, USA, Japan). Continuous industry growth reach 20% per year. Clients and partners of Lithuanian laser manufacturers include: NASA the nuclear Research centre in Israel, Rutherford Laboratories in England, Berkeley University in the USA, The Livermore National Laboratory, etc. It took 80% of the global production of ultra-fast parametric amplifiers. Laser manufacturing sector of Lithuania shows a 15-20% growth per year. Every 10th scientific laser used in the world is produced in Lithuania.

Talent pool

Lithuanian education is in the 1st place in EU for a share of graduates in total population, in CEE – for quality of math and science education. 11 % of all students are enrolled in programmes related to life sciences.
