The food sector produces a major share of the total value created by Lithuanian producers. The most developed food processing subsectors are milk, meat and grain processing.
The food and beverages industry accounts for about 4.5 % of GDP, employ 4.6 percent (~42.5 k) of total workers and is amounted to 3.4 billion EUR of which 1.8 billion to export. About 979 companies operate in the food processing industry in Lithuania. European Union countries accounted for almost 85 % of exports by the food and beverages industry leading by Germany (15.7 %), followed by Latvia (10.7 %), Poland (10.3 %) and Italy (9.7 %)
