Higher education system in Lithuania
Lithuania was the first country in the Eastern Europe to establish a university back in 1579. Today Lithuania has a modern, highly-developed education system which offers a broad spectrum of academic institutions. Lithuania’s education successfully blends values of Western culture with the unique Baltic traditions and mentality. The system is focused on innovation, creativity and exceptional quality thus providing students with necessary competencies and skills for today’s fast-paced academic and business world.
Lithuanian higher education and scientific research in numbers:
- Number of students: 220.000
- Number of foreign students (2011-2012): 4453
- 22 universities: 14 public, 8 private
- 24 colleges: 13 public, 11 private
- 13 state research institutes
- 59 Bachelor and 77 Master international programmes
- 5 integrated science, study and business centers
- 13 800 researchers, 6 400 with PhDs
- 300-400 new doctoral degrees each year
- 10.7% researchers in business and industry
- Investments in R&D: 0,8 % of GDP. In 2020 expected 2% of GDP
Studies are divided into three levels: Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral studies. The length of time required to study depends on each level. A degree is awarded after the completion of fulltime or part-time studies.
The selection of study programmes available in a foreign languages increases every year. Institutions of higher education regularly update their study programmes (partial/credit studies) by adapting them for international students. Most programmes are offered in English, Russian and Polish languages.
